For over a decade, Polish international striker Robert Lewandowski has caused havoc in Bundesliga defences, firstly with Dortmund and more recently with behemoths of the German game Bayern Munich.

Last season was a landmark one for the prolific 33-year-old as he scored 41 goals in the German top-flight to break the late-great Gerd Muller’s goalscoring record for goals in a single season.

It was a massive achievement, as many thought that no player would ever better the prolific greats most potent campaign of his Bundesliga career.

However, Lewandowski is quite simply a goal machine. His prolific scoring form also benefits his national team, as the veteran star has now scored an impressive six goals in four World Cup qualifiers. He will be leading Poland’s front line against England in a qualifier this evening.

It is his form for Bayern that is likely to go down as his biggest achievement when he looks back on his glittering career, though.

With a bit of luck, Lewandowski could well even better that record this season. Last season he missed five Bundesliga games through injury, so scored his 41 goals in 28 starts and one substitute appearance.

If he can stay injury-free and maintain his fitness an even more prolific Bundesliga campaign could be in order. This season Lewandowski has already scored an impressive five goals in Bayern Munich’s opening three league outings, netting against every opponent he has faced in the German top-flight.

The forward was for many the best player in world football last season. Due to the global pandemic, there was no Ballon d’Or award last year, though.

However, if he can continue in his rich vein of goalscoring form, the former Dortmund striker would have to be a candidate next time around.

Quite simply, he is one of the most prolific number nines of his generation and it seems age will not stop him from scoring goals.
