Wolfsburg have started the Bundesliga season well and go into matchday 3 seeking a third straight win. Mark van Bommel’s team are the only Bundesliga side to start the 2021-22 campaign with a perfect record.
On Sunday, the Wolves take on RB Leipzig at the VW Arena. RB Leipzig are coming off of a matchday 2 win against Stuttgart, 4-0. Both Van Bommel and coach Jesse Marsch are in their first years at their respective clubs. Both sides are expected to fight for top four places throughout the campaign.
RB Leipzig are on a great run of form against Wolfsburg over the course of the teams’ last nine games in all competitions. Last season, Die Roten Bullen took just two points from six in the Bundesliga against Wolfsburg.
The teams drew 2-2 at the VW Arena repeated the scoreline at the Red Bull Arena later in the campaign. RB Leipzig did win the sides’ DFB Pokal match at the Red Bull Arena 2-0 on their way to the cup final.
Van Bommel’s team signed Luca Waldschmidt from Benfica last week and the former Freiburg player will push for a place in the starting XI.
Marsch has chosen to start Marcel Sabitzer on the bench this season with the Austrian midfielder potentially leaving for Bayern Munich in the transfer window. Tyler Adams and Amadou Haidara are likely to start in the middle of the park once more.
Left-back Angelino is likely to miss the game with a thigh injury. His place will be taken by Josko Gvardiol, who has impressed this season thus far. Marsch could give the likes of Kevin Kampl, Konrad Laimer and Yussuf Poulsen the chance to start the game.
Wolfsburg’s previous home game saw them defeat Bochum 1-0. RB Leipzig’s previous road game was against Mainz. The game ended in a shock 1-0 loss for Die Roten Bullen.
The las three matches in the Bundesliga between Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig finished in stalemates. The two teams should see a winner this time around in the league. Wolfsburg are playing well in the league having taken two wins from two matches.
Van Bommel has turned the Wolves into a strong side with wins over Bochum and Hertha Berlin. Wout Weghorst, Lukas Nmecha and Bote Baku have all got on the scoresheet this season.
Wolfsburg should end their winless run against RB Leipzig and claim a win versus RB Leipzig for the first time since 2018-19. Like last season’s matches, both teams should score and over 2.5 goals will be tallied.
