Zenit vs Malmö FF Preview 29/09/2021

On Wednesday night, Zenit host Malmo in Group H of the Champions League, as the two teams look for valuable points in a difficult group.

The other teams in the group are Italian giants Juventus and reigning European champions Chelsea. Therefore, both Zenit and Malmo entered the competition as underdogs to make it to the last-16 of the Champions League.

The fact that both suffered defeats in gameweek one of the competition reiterates their status in the group. Zenit suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while the Swedish visitors lost 3-0 at home against Max Allegri’s Juventus.

Both teams are flying high in their domestic leagues, but the Champions League is a big step up from the Russian and Swedish top-flights respectively.

The defeat for Zenit means that they have now failed to win in eight games in the Champions League, having suffered seven defeats. The fact that the Russian team has conceded at least two goals in eight of their previous 11 matches has not helped matters.

Even the Saint-Petersburg Stadium has not brought much comfort for the Russian team in the Champions League, as they have won just one of their previous five matches on home soil in Europe’s elite competition.

The defeat against Juventus was a second straight defeat for Malmo in the Champions League. However, because the Swedish team came through the qualifying rounds their record before the two straight losses is pretty good.

In fact, before a defeat against Ludogorets in the qualifying round second leg they were 13 games unbeaten in the competition.

Malmo have a mixed recent away record in the Champions League, as they have won one game, lost a game and drawn three of their last five away matches in the competition.

PlusBet.net predicts that Zenit will improve their record in the Champions League by recording a narrow win in a low-scoring encounter.
